Shock In Edo As Man Arrested Over Alleged Defilement Of 70-Year-Old Woman
The Edo State Police Command has arrested a 37-year-old man in connection with the alleged rape of a 70-year-old woman in Igueben Local Government Area of the state.
According to Bush Radio Academy, the command’s spokesperson, ASP Eno Ikoedem, disclosed the arrest on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, during a press briefing on the command’s operational activities and achievements over the past week.
Ikoedem, who spoke on behalf of the Commissioner of Police, Patrick Daaor, said the suspect remained in police custody while investigators continued to examine the circumstances surrounding the alleged offence.
The police spokesperson described sexual violence as a serious concern and said the command was treating the case with attention. She added that the suspect would be prosecuted in accordance with the law if the investigation establishes sufficient grounds for prosecution.
“Regrettably, sexual violence remains a serious concern,” Ikoedem said, confirming that the 37-year-old suspect was being held in connection with the alleged incident involving the elderly woman.
She explained that the investigation was ongoing and that the police would take the appropriate legal steps upon its conclusion.
In a separate development, the police spokesperson disclosed that operatives attached to the Otuo Division had arrested seven suspected members of a cult group during an intelligence-led operation aimed at tackling cult-related activities in the state.
The arrests form part of the Edo State Police Command’s ongoing efforts to address criminal activities and maintain security across communities in the state.
