Shock In Zamfara As Prison Officer Jumps Into Dam In Suicide Attempt

Abdullahi Nura, a Chief Correctional Assistant (CCA) with the Nigerian Correctional Service stationed at the Medium Security Custodial Centre in Gusau, Zamfara State, reportedly attempted to take his own life.

The incident occurred early Wednesday morning when Nura, after reporting for duty, hired a commercial motorcycle rider who took him to the Gusau Dam — the largest and deepest in the city. Upon arrival, he suddenly leapt into the water in what appears to be a suicide attempt. His motive remains unclear.

According to a statement from the Zamfara State Command’s Public Relations Officer, ASC I Mustapha Abubakar, the motorcyclist who transported him quickly raised an alarm. Security personnel at the dam swiftly intervened and managed to rescue Nura from drowning.

The officer was found in his official service uniform and in possession of his ID card. Upon receiving the report, the State Headquarters of the Nigerian Correctional Service acted promptly. The State Controller of Corrections, CCS Musa Tanko, dispatched a team of officers who transported Nura to the MSCC Medical Clinic in Gusau.
