Shock Move: Senate And Reps Delay Plenary Resumption, Citing Key Reasons

The Senate and the House of Representatives have postponed their planned resumption of plenary from January 28 to February 4, 2025.

In separate statements issued by their clerks on Saturday, both chambers of the National Assembly cited the need to complete ongoing 2025 budget defence sessions as the reason for the postponement.

Senate Clerk Andrew Nwoba announced the change, stating, “The resumption date has been rescheduled from Tuesday, 28th January 2025, to Tuesday, 4th February 2025, at 11:00 am prompt, due to the ongoing budget defence.”

Similarly, House of Representatives spokesperson Akin Rotimi, referencing a memo from the Clerk of the House, Dr. Yahaya Danzaria, confirmed the rescheduling of the green chamber’s resumption.

“The House of Representatives has postponed its plenary resumption, originally set for January 28, 2025. The new date is now Tuesday, February 4, 2025. This decision allows Committees to complete budget engagements and defences with Ministries, Departments, and Agencies (MDAs), ensuring a thorough and comprehensive approach to legislative responsibilities,” the statement noted.

The House reiterated its commitment to fulfilling its legislative mandate for the benefit of Nigerians, appreciating the understanding of all stakeholders.

It is worth noting that President Bola Tinubu had, in December 2024, presented a ₦49.74 trillion budget proposal to the National Assembly for approval.
