Shockwaves In PDP: Anyanwu Reveals Governors’ Secret Plan For Breakaway Party

Senator Sam Anyanwu, the embattled National Secretary of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), has accused the party’s governors and Board of Trustees (BoT) of orchestrating his removal due to his close association with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

In an interview with Saturday Tribune, Anyanwu alleged that PDP governors are not only pushing for his ouster but are also secretly planning to establish a new political party. He described the recent moves to inaugurate Sunday Udeh-Okoye—who was affirmed as National Secretary by the Court of Appeal—as part of a broader “proxy war” led by governors and BoT members against him.

The PDP has been mired in internal divisions, largely split between factions loyal to Wike and those opposed to his growing influence. Anyanwu, a staunch ally of Wike, received the former Rivers State governor’s backing during his unsuccessful run for the Imo State governorship. He claims his adversaries within the party are targeting him solely because of his connection to Wike.

Anyanwu Labels Governors’ Forum a ‘Social Club’

Dismissing the legitimacy of the governors’ and BoT’s maneuvers, Anyanwu argued that neither body holds constitutional authority within the PDP structure.

“These people are fighting a proxy war because of my relationship with Wike. That’s the whole story. I have no personal issues with any of them,” he stated.

He downplayed the significance of the PDP Governors’ Forum, describing it as a voluntary association without binding authority. “The governors’ forum is just a social gathering. Membership isn’t mandatory. Any governor can choose to participate or not,” he said.

Highlighting his tenure within the party, Anyanwu emphasized, “I know these people. The party handed them tickets to become governors. I was already National Secretary before many of them even held office.”

Governors Allegedly Stirring Crisis to Justify Defection

Anyanwu further accused PDP governors of deliberately fomenting internal chaos as a pretext for defecting to other political platforms or launching new ones.

“There’s no real crisis in the party. They’re just stirring up unnecessary tension to create an excuse to leave and form new parties,” he asserted.
