Sifiso Dabengwa, Former CEO Of MTN Group, Passes Away

Dabengwa served as MTN’s CEO from March 2011 until 2015, when he resigned amidst the company’s efforts to negotiate a record N1.04 trillion fine imposed by Nigeria for failing to disconnect over five million unregistered SIM cards.

Born in Zimbabwe, Dabengwa also held the position of CEO for MTN Nigeria until 2006. South African media outlets have quoted a family spokesperson, Themba Sibanyoni, who confirmed Dabengwa’s death.

Sibanyoni remarked, “Dabengwa was a titan in the telecommunications industry and an astute businessman. His tenure as CEO of MTN Group from 2011 to 2015 was marked by visionary leadership, integrity, and dedication that drove significant advancements in the industry.” He further highlighted that Dabengwa’s legacy extends far beyond the boardroom, noting his advocacy for education and belief in the transformative power of technology.

An MTN executive, speaking from the company’s Johannesburg headquarters, confirmed the news of Dabengwa’s passing with deep sorrow. She noted that the entire MTN family is mourning, as Dabengwa, who led the company through several progressive years, remained a respected member of the MTN community.

Dabengwa had reportedly been battling cancer for some time before succumbing to the illness in the early hours of Monday.
