Simon Ekpa Faces Terrorism Charges In Finland Over Biafra Agitation

Finnish prosecutors on Friday confirmed that a man, identified by local media as Nigerian separatist leader Simon Ekpa, has been formally charged with inciting terrorism through online platforms. The charges stem from an investigation into his activities between 2021 and 2024 in Lahti, Finland.

According to a statement by the Finnish National Prosecution Authority, the individual—a Finnish citizen—faces accusations of public incitement to commit crimes with terrorist intent and involvement in the operations of a terrorist organisation.

The case revolves around efforts to establish an independent Biafra state in southeastern Nigeria—a movement long associated with Ekpa’s activism.

Though the prosecution authority did not directly name the accused, Finnish public broadcaster YLE identified the man as Simon Ekpa, a self-styled leader of a faction within the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB). Ekpa has consistently championed the secession of Nigeria’s southeast region and claims to head the self-declared Biafra Republic government in exile.

He was arrested in November and has remained in custody since. Ekpa denies all charges against him.

The Biafra independence movement, which triggered the Nigerian Civil War in the late 1960s, has been marked by violence and controversy. Ekpa’s faction of IPOB has been at the forefront of renewed calls for separation, often sparking unrest in the region.

In addition to his separatist activities, Ekpa was previously involved in Finnish politics, serving as a local representative for the conservative National Coalition Party in Lahti and sitting on the city’s public transport committee.

During his arrest, Finnish authorities also detained four individuals suspected of financing his activities. However, the prosecution revealed on Friday that those charges have been dropped due to insufficient evidence.
