She shared her story during an interview on the Honest Bunch podcast, reflecting on the obstacles she encountered while pursuing an education and following the career path she believed in.
Anunobi revealed that her father did not believe in educating a girl, thinking that girls would eventually marry and leave their families. Despite having the means to support her schooling, he refused to fund her education.
The tension escalated when she declined to pursue the career he had chosen for her. Her father wanted her to take an office job and even brought home employment forms for her to fill out. Anunobi, however, refused to comply, insisting on carving her own path—a decision that enraged her father.
She recounted a particularly painful period when her father locked her in a room for six months because she refused to complete the employment forms. He slid the forms under the door, but she still refused to sign them.
“My father locked me in my room for six months because I wouldn’t fill out the employment forms for the office job he wanted me to take. He passed the forms under the door, insisting I complete them, but I refused,” she said.
She further explained, “He did not support my education; he didn’t pay my school fees. What is even a girl child? After all, they’re going to get married. He unofficially disowned me and disapproved of my acting career. I had to sneak out of the house and even jump the fence to attend auditions. Modeling became my way of financing my education and supporting myself.”
Anunobi described a turning point in her journey: “Winning my first award in London for the film Glamour Girls changed everything. When I returned home and presented the award to my father, our relationship improved. Seeing my achievements, he finally blessed me.”
