The controversy began after Maduka, founder of Coscharis Group, condemned the expression, calling it misleading and wasteful. He argued that true wealth should inspire humility rather than extravagance and that his generation valued modesty over material showmanship.

In a lengthy Instagram post, Cubana Chief Priest countered Maduka’s comments, asserting that the modern world operates on a different kind of economy — one driven by attention and visibility.

According to him, while the older generation built factories, fleets, and real estate, today’s wealth stems from influence, content creation, and digital engagement.

“In your time, capital was factories, fleets, and real estate. In our time, attention is the main capital,” Chief Priest wrote. “In a digital economy, obscurity is bankruptcy. What you don’t show doesn’t sell.”

He clarified that “Money na water” is not a boastful phrase but a symbol of abundance and fluidity, representing financial flow and relevance in a world where visibility determines success.

The nightlife boss further criticised Maduka for dismissing the efforts of modern billionaires who use their wealth to project Africa positively, naming Tony Elumelu and Femi Otedola as examples of successful, visible entrepreneurs.

“Your generation built fences to protect wealth. Ours builds platforms to project it,” he wrote. “Elumelu and Otedola are examples of people using wealth to give Africa visibility. That’s why you reference them and not the quiet billionaires who hoard wealth.”

Chief Priest concluded by reaffirming his stance:

“Money na water is not vanity — it’s a prophecy of wealth and flow. This is my truth. Nobody should try to twist it. My lamba continues, and my peace anthem drops Friday midnight.”
