Sola Ebiseni Quits Afenifere Leadership, Dumps Labour Party For APC

Sola Ebiseni has resigned as Secretary-General of the pan-Yoruba socio-political organisation, Afenifere, following his decision to leave the Labour Party and join the All Progressives Congress.

Ebiseni announced the political move during a meeting with Ondo State Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa at the Government House in Akure, where he also declared his support for President Bola Tinubu’s bid for a second term in the 2027 presidential election.

According to Bush Radio Academy, Ebiseni, who previously served as the South-West Coordinator of Peter Obi’s 2023 Presidential Campaign Council, said his decision to support Tinubu was influenced by his belief that the presidency should remain in southern Nigeria for reasons of political stability.

Ebiseni said the move was consistent with what he described as the position of many Nigerians and political stakeholders who favour retaining the presidency in the southern part of the country.

He also linked his decision to the development needs of his constituents in the Ilaje coastal area of Ondo State, particularly the Lagos-Calabar Coastal Highway. Ebiseni described the coastal road project as a significant development initiative for the people of the area and said he wanted to support efforts to ensure its proper alignment through Ondo State. His concern over the exclusion of parts of Ondo’s coastline from the project had previously been publicly expressed while he was still serving as Afenifere Secretary-General.

Receiving Ebiseni and his supporters, Governor Aiyedatiwa assured them of integration into the APC’s campaign structures ahead of the 2027 elections.

The governor highlighted Ebiseni’s political experience, including his previous service as chairman of the former Ilaje-Ese-Odo Local Government and as a commissioner in Ondo State. He also pointed to Ebiseni’s leadership role in Afenifere and involvement in other socio-political organisations.

Ebiseni’s move represents a significant change from his political position during the 2023 general election, when he served as a senior coordinator in Peter Obi’s presidential campaign. He was also the Labour Party’s candidate in the 2024 Ondo State governorship election before a court order resulted in his substitution on the ballot.

His decision comes as political parties and support groups intensify preparations for the 2027 general elections. Governor Aiyedatiwa has recently called on APC members in Ondo State to unite and support the party’s candidates, while warning against activities that could undermine the party ahead of the elections.

Ebiseni is expected to work with the APC campaign structure in Ondo State as the party begins broader mobilisation ahead of the 2027 elections.
