Governor Soludo has subsequently forwarded an executive bill to the state House of Assembly aimed at reestablishing the Anambra State Independent Electoral Commission (ANSIEC), which has been inactive for many years.

The bill, which has already passed its second reading, was introduced to the House by the majority leader, Ikenna Ofodeme. Once enacted, it will empower the executive branch to conduct local government elections in the state.

According to Ofodeme, the bill, containing around 110 clauses, is designed to address the interests of both government officials and the general populace.

Governor Soludo had previously pledged, during his inaugural address on March 17, 2022, to prioritize the conduct of local government elections. However, the elections have yet to be held two years into his administration.

During the debate on Tuesday, majority leader Ofodeme emphasized the governor’s commitment to conducting a free and fair local government election.

Supporting the motion, Mr. Patrick Okafor, representing Onitsha North 2, noted that the bill’s provisions demonstrate the governor’s dedication to delivering democratic benefits to the grassroots through a duly elected local government.

Echoing these sentiments, Mr. Noble Igwe, representing Ogbaru constituency 1, highlighted that lawmakers have been diligently working on the bill for the past six months to ensure that the Commission is fully empowered to conduct credible local government elections.

Additionally, Lady Nkechi Ogbuefi, representing Anaocha constituency 1, and Emmanuel Nwafor, representing Orumba South constituency, praised the governor for his determination to fulfill his promise of holding local government elections
