The tragic incident unfolded on February 10, 2023, when the pair was fatally shot outside a well-known Durban eatery, mere hours before AKA was slated to perform at a nearby nightclub.

AKA, who initially rose to prominence as part of the rap ensemble ‘Entity’ before embarking on a successful solo journey, was a revered figure in South Africa’s music landscape and beyond.

Throughout his career, he amassed numerous accolades, securing honors at both the Black Entertainment Television and MTV Europe Music Awards. His artistic prowess and contributions to the industry were posthumously celebrated at the 2023 BET Hip Hop Awards.

The arrests follow extensive inquiries into the circumstances surrounding the homicides, which have now been unveiled as a targeted assault.

In a statement on Tuesday evening, KwaZulu-Natal provincial Police Commissioner, Lt Gen Nhlanhla Mkhwanazi, revealed that the investigation had traced AKA’s movements from the airport to the Durban location of the attack, noting that Motshoane was not the primary target.

South Africa’s Police Minister, Bheki Cele, affirmed that the murders, captured on Closed-Circuit Television (CCTV) cameras, had deeply unsettled the nation, already contending with one of the highest murder rates globally.

Cele expressed optimism that the arrests would offer some semblance of closure to South Africans and foster a sense of justice for the victims and their families.
