South-East Labour Party Legislators Demand Immediate Release Of Nnamdi Kanu

They argue that his release would significantly help address the security issues in the region.

In a press conference held in Awka, the South-East Labour Party House of Assembly caucus emphasized that President Bola Tinubu has the authority to facilitate Kanu’s release. They noted that his ongoing detention contributes to the region’s insecurity and economic challenges.

Speaking on behalf of the 11 caucus members, LP caucus leader Hon Jude Ifeanyi Umennajiego said, “We express our happiness and gratitude to the South East Governors, Senators, and House of Representatives members for their recent efforts to engage with the federal government regarding the release of Mazi Nnamdi Kanu from detention. We view this as a demonstration of leadership and concern for the people.

We, therefore, appeal to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to urgently release Mazi Nnamdi Kanu to alleviate the current security crisis in the zone.

This insecurity has severely impacted the region’s economy and resulted in significant loss of lives and property. His release will act as a healing balm for the region and foster a sense of national unity. It will also help distinguish genuine agitators from criminals involved in kidnapping.”

The lawmakers also urged Southeast governors to provide full financial autonomy to the State Houses of Assembly as required by the constitution and the Principles of Separation of Powers.

They believe this is essential for enhancing the effectiveness of legislative functions, oversight, and other related duties.

“Following the Federal Government’s example, this will deepen democracy in the states and ensure more effective representation,” they added.
