South-West governors have taken proactive measures to address food scarcity by bolstering farm security through the creation of specialized units within the Western Nigeria Security Network, known as Amotekun. This decision, aimed at combating pervasive insecurity in the region, was reached during a roundtable on food security organized by the Development Agenda for Western Nigeria (DAWN) Commission in Ibadan.
Representatives of all six governors, led by their Commissioners for Agriculture, convened to formulate a regional agricultural strategy following a directive from the Southwest Governors’ Forum. Key outcomes of the meeting included plans for comprehensive implementation of resolutions such as extensive land clearing, heightened security measures, and increased cultivation of short-term crops like maize, sweet potatoes, and vegetables.
Additionally, initiatives were proposed to revive dormant dams for irrigation, enhance mechanization across agricultural processes, adopt a cluster farming approach, expand distribution of farming inputs, and establish an electronic database for agriculture. The Director General of the DAWN Commission, Dr. Seye Oyeleye, emphasized the necessity of discarding misconceptions about the region’s agricultural productivity and urged stakeholders to devise practical recommendations for swift gubernatorial implementation in the coming months.
