Protests erupted in various cities, including Lagos, Kano, Gombe, Kaduna, Yobe, Borno, Niger, Kebbi, and Abuja, with some becoming violent.
In an interview with The Punch, Sowore, a key organizer, criticized the government for escalating the situation into violence. He reported that 17 protesters had been killed by the Nigeria Police Force, including an officer killed by a fellow policeman’s water cannon in Katsina State and an immigration officer who accidentally shot himself in Borno State.
Sowore expressed profound sadness for those who died or were injured while peacefully protesting, asserting that the violence was initiated by the government. He condemned the use of water cannons and live bullets against unarmed protesters holding placards.
“We will pursue legal action to hold the government accountable for their unjust actions against these individuals,” Sowore declared. “Those responsible for these severe crimes against the Nigerian people will eventually face legal consequences.”
Regarding the looting and vandalism during the protests, Sowore clarified that the organizers had advocated for non-violence and had urged participants to avoid aggression. He maintained that the violence was sparked by the government’s aggressive response, including the use of water cannons, tear gas, and live ammunition against peaceful demonstrators.
