Human rights activist and former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore, has responded to U.S. President Donald Trump’s designation of Nigeria as a “country of particular concern” following reports of alleged Christian genocide.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

In a Truth Social post on Friday, Trump attributed the killings of Christians in Nigeria to “radical Islamists” and declared that the United States “cannot stand by while such atrocities are happening.”

Sowore, speaking via his X account on Saturday, cautioned against framing Nigeria’s security crisis solely as a religious issue. He highlighted that the country’s ongoing insecurity is rooted in decades of corruption, poor governance, and failed leadership.

The SaharaReporters publisher stressed that Nigeria’s path to salvation depends on responsible domestic leadership, not foreign intervention. He stated, “Nigeria should have long been cited as a Country of Concern for its persistent failure to protect citizens. At every level, the state has failed to safeguard vulnerable Christians, Muslims, and traditional believers alike. Children, women, students, workers, and the elderly have all suffered under corruption and illegitimate leadership.”

While acknowledging the suffering of Christian communities in northern states such as Benue, Plateau, Gombe, and Kaduna, Sowore pointed out that Muslim populations in Katsina, Zamfara, Borno, and Yobe face similar threats.

“Across the nation, Nigerians battered by hunger, poverty, and displacement are crying out for safety and dignity,” he added.

Sowore concluded that although international attention may provide temporary relief, lasting change requires genuine homegrown reforms. “While designations like this may bring momentary relief to some communities, the real solution lies in honest, courageous leadership that values human life and justice over politics,” he said.
