In the aftermath of President Bola Tinubu’s controversial decision to remove fuel subsidies, Omoyele Sowore, the 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress (AAC), has shared his skepticism regarding whether Peter Obi, his Labour Party counterpart, would have implemented a different economic policy if he had won the election. As Nigerians grapple with the economic repercussions of the fuel subsidy removal, criticism has been mounting against President Tinubu. However, Sowore doesn’t believe that Peter Obi, the former Governor of Anambra State, would have pursued an alternative economic path.
In a two-minute video posted on his Twitter page on Wednesday, January 31, 2024, Sowore, a pro-democracy campaigner, expressed his views on the matter. He contended that Peter Obi, if elected President, would have taken a similar stance on fuel subsidy removal.
Sowore stated, “Right now, the biggest people who are mobilising for revolution are the Labour Party people because what Tinubu is doing now is what they would have done. Had Peter Obi become the President of Nigeria, he would have removed fuel subsidies.”
He went on to suggest that the actions taken by Tinubu align with what other political figures, like Atiku Abubakar, might have pursued if they were in power. Sowore claimed, “What Tinubu is doing now is what Atiku would have done if he had become the President. In fact, Atiku swore that if Nigerians would kill him, he would sell all the refineries to his friends, but we are different.”
Both Sowore and Peter Obi contested in the 2023 presidential elections but were defeated by Tinubu, the candidate of the All Progressives Congress. The video shared by Sowore has stirred discussions about the potential policy directions different candidates might have taken if they had won the presidency.
