Sowore Takes To New York Streets, Joins Protesters Demanding End To Gaza War
African Action Congress (AAC) presidential candidate and activist Omoyele Sowore joined a pro-Palestinian demonstration in New York, United States, on Thursday, September 24, as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu visited the city for the United Nations General Assembly.
Sowore disclosed his participation in a post on his official X account on Friday, saying he joined protesters calling for an end to the war in Gaza and expressing support for Palestinian rights.
According to Bush Radio Academy, Sowore said his participation was intended to demonstrate solidarity with Palestinians and draw attention to issues of justice and human rights.
“Yes, today in New York, I joined the Free Palestine protest. No justice, no peace! #FreePalestine!” he wrote.
The demonstration took place as Netanyahu delivered his address at the 81st session of the United Nations General Assembly. Several protests were held around the UN headquarters, with demonstrators blocking roads and calling for an end to the war in Gaza and opposing US military support for Israel.
Sowore also said he condemned Israel’s military campaign in Gaza and argued that Nigerians should stand for justice and human rights for Palestinians.
Police made arrests during the demonstrations. Reuters reported that at least 30 people, including actors and politicians, were arrested during one protest outside the UN headquarters.
A separate report by Al Jazeera said 103 people were arrested during a demonstration in which protesters blocked a road near the United Nations. The New York Police Department said those arrested were taken into custody for disorderly conduct and were later released.
The protests attracted activists, politicians and public figures, including actors Susan Sarandon and Hannah Einbinder, who were among those detained during demonstrations against Netanyahu’s visit.
The demonstrations coincided with Netanyahu’s UN address, during which he defended Israel’s actions in the ongoing conflict and faced a visible walkout by a number of delegates.
Sowore’s participation adds an international dimension to his political activism as he continues preparations for Nigeria’s 2027 presidential election.
