Nobel Laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka has urged anti-graft agencies to scrutinize certain politicians affiliated with the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) for potential corrupt practices during their previous tenures in elected offices. While acknowledging President Bola Tinubu’s commendable role as a “doughty fighter” during the National Democratic Coalition (NADECO) days over three decades ago, Soyinka emphasized the importance of considering an individual’s past record. He clarified that past achievements should not hinder criticism or scrutiny of public figures on current issues.

Soyinka stated, “Tinubu was a doughty fighter during the anti-Sani Abacha struggle…Even the law recognizes that somebody’s record must always be taken into account before you descend on that person for some kind of neglect, criminality, failure, whatever.” He emphasized his commitment to holding individuals accountable for corruption, irrespective of their historical contributions.

The renowned elder statesman expressed his determination to examine those within Tinubu’s government who, in his view, should face trial but currently hold crucial positions within the ruling party. Soyinka urged the EFCC and ICPC to investigate these individuals, questioning whether they were being held accountable for their actions.

Soyinka’s call for accountability coincided with his assessment of the current administration, which he stated would be provided after Tinubu’s one-year anniversary in office. Additionally, he alleged a conspiracy to nullify the 2023 presidential election, drawing parallels with the annulled 1993 election during the era of former military Head of State, Ibrahim Babangida. Soyinka asserted that there was a premeditated effort to prevent the elections from taking place or manipulate the outcome, echoing concerns from the past and emphasizing the need for vigilance to avoid a recurrence of historical injustices.
