Tanko, commenting on the controversy surrounding the recent seizure of three presidential jets in the UK, criticized the government for secretly acquiring assets without public knowledge.
Recently, Zhongshan Fucheng Industrial Investment Co. Limited, a Chinese firm whose export processing zone contract was terminated by Ogun State in 2016, won a court order to seize a Dassault Falcon 7X, an Airbus A330-243, and a Boeing 737-7N6/BBJ belonging to Nigeria. The French court issued the seizure order in a dispute related to the company’s contract with Ogun State.
One of the seized jets, recently purchased by the government, was released for President Bola Tinubu’s use on Friday.
Tanko pointed out that the issue has sparked controversy, with critics blaming the Nigerian government for incompetence and negligence. He suggested that there may be many similar undisclosed cases.
Tanko stated, “It is evident that those in power often forget they hold office as trustees for the public. They are supposed to be accountable and transparent at all times.”
He criticized the government for conducting transactions in secrecy, which, according to him, facilitates corruption and results in embarrassing situations when exposed. He urged for greater transparency and accountability to prevent such issues, highlighting the recent controversy over the presidential jets and the Ogun State contract as examples of the need for open governance.
