The National Secretary of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), Rauf Aregbesola, has suggested that political parties should have the power to nominate individuals to lead the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC).....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶

Aregbesola made the proposal on Monday during a panel discussion in Abuja titled “Innovation in Electoral Technology 2015–2025.”

He recommended that only political parties with at least five members in the National Assembly should be allowed to nominate INEC leaders, who would then operate on an equal footing.

Aregbesola said, “The issues surrounding Nigerian elections are far more complex than we often acknowledge. From appointing the INEC chairman and all commissioners to managing the entire electoral process, there are serious concerns. The current system fails to inspire public confidence. We must rethink how these appointments are made to restore trust.

“My suggestion is simple: let parties with at least five members in the National Assembly nominate individuals to head INEC on an equal basis. This would resolve many of the existing problems. If the parties then allow one to dominate, so be it. But the current practice, where the main beneficiary of manipulation effectively selects INEC leaders, is deceptive. Pretending that technology alone can guarantee fairness is misleading.”
