Stop Pressuring Women To Marry Early – Lola Idije Sends Strong Message To Society
Veteran Nollywood actress Toyin Afolayan, popularly known as Lola Idije, has called on society to stop putting unnecessary pressure on women to get married at an early age, stressing that everyone has a different journey in life.
The actress made the appeal during an appearance on the Africanlist Podcast, where she explained that some women may not find suitable life partners until they are 40 or even 50 years old.
According to Lola Idije, society should understand that marriage does not happen at the same time for everyone and that women should not be made to feel inadequate simply because they are yet to settle down.
She also criticised the tendency to judge women raising children without husbands, noting that some become single mothers because of circumstances beyond their control rather than personal choice.
The veteran actress explained that not every woman has a husband to support her in raising children, leaving some to shoulder the responsibilities of parenthood alone.
She maintained that being a single mother does not automatically mean a woman made the wrong decision, as certain situations in life can place people in circumstances they never anticipated.
Lola Idije further questioned the wisdom of pressuring young women to marry in their twenties, warning that rushing into marriage could increase the possibility of making the wrong choice.
She emphasised that women deserve understanding and support rather than criticism over their marital status or family circumstances.
The actress added that women should be allowed to make important life decisions at their own pace without being subjected to societal expectations and unnecessary judgment.
