Strategies To Alleviate Insecurity: Insights From Ribadu On Northern Nigeria

The National Security Adviser, Nuhu Ribadu, emphasized the need for a comprehensive approach to tackle the insecurity prevailing in northern Nigeria during his recent address at the convocation ceremony of Usman DanFodiyo University, Sokoto.

Ribadu characterized the insecurity situation in northern Nigeria as multifaceted, stemming from a combination of socio-economic, ethnic, and religious factors. He traced the historical origins of banditry in the region back to the British colonial era, citing the amalgamation of the Northern and Southern Protectorates in the early 20th century as partly driven by security concerns.

Highlighting the evolution of banditry, Ribadu noted a proliferation of over 300 bandit warlords operating with substantial forces across various parts of Northern Nigeria. He underscored the contemporary transformation of banditry from localized conflicts to more organized and lucrative criminal activities, including kidnapping for ransom and large-scale violence.

Ribadu stressed the importance of addressing the underlying causes of insecurity, including land disputes, socio-economic disparities, climate change, radicalization, and governance issues. He emphasized the necessity of a holistic approach that not only focuses on security measures but also tackles the root causes driving insecurity in the region.

Additionally, Ribadu mentioned President Bola Tinubu’s administration’s strategy for addressing national security challenges across the country.
