Governor Sheriff Oborevwori of Delta State has expressed optimism that reducing pressure on the naira against the dollar could be achieved if Nigeria halts the importation of petroleum products. He emphasized the need for the Federal Government to expedite actions towards reviving the country’s refineries to conserve foreign exchange currently used for fuel imports.

During a meeting with the Senate Ad-hoc Committee on Turnaround Maintenance of Nigerian Refineries, led by Senator Ifeanyi Ubah, at the Government House in Asaba, Oborevwori conveyed his confidence in the committee’s ability to effectively execute their task. He emphasized the seriousness of the assignment and its potential to address the challenges posed by fuel importation, which is straining the nation’s forex reserves.

Oborevwori highlighted the significance of refinery revitalization, stating that it would not only eliminate the need for fuel imports but also bolster the nation’s economy. He assured the committee of Delta State’s full support, pledging assistance for their oversight responsibilities.

In response, Senator Ubah elucidated the committee’s mandate to oversee the rehabilitation of refineries, combat crude oil theft, enhance oil production, and address issues pertaining to the Niger Delta region. He commended the tradition of paying homage to state executives and expressed gratitude for the opportunity to meet with Governor Oborevwori.

The visit underscores the government’s commitment to addressing critical issues in the oil sector and fostering collaboration between federal and state authorities for the benefit of the nation’s economy and energy security.
