The decision followed an emergency Congress held on Monday and was confirmed in a statement released to journalists on Wednesday by the union’s interim leadership, Prof. Michael Olamoyegun and Dr. Ayobami Alabi. Lectures resumed on Tuesday, December 2, 2025, at 8 a.m.
The strike, which began on July 31, was in protest against the delayed implementation of the Consolidated Medical Salary Structure (CONMESS). While only the basic salary component has been paid, allowances and arrears dating back to January 2025 remain unpaid.
NAMDA explained that the suspension of the strike aims to facilitate constructive dialogue with university authorities to secure full CONMESS benefits, including outstanding allowances and arrears.
The union stated:
“Following a comprehensive deliberation at the Emergency Congress of our association, the NAMDA LAUTECH chapter reviewed the progress made on our demand for full implementation of CONMESS for all medically qualified lecturers. Congress noted that only the basic component of CONMESS has been received, while all associated allowances and arrears since January 2025 remain outstanding. These unresolved components form the core of our ongoing negotiation with University Management.
“After careful consideration, Congress unanimously resolved to suspend the ongoing strike, which began on July 31, to allow further constructive engagement with the University Management toward securing the full CONMESS package, including allowances and arrears.”
The Congress also approved a framework for regular monitoring of progress on implementation, emphasizing that any future escalation would depend on the university management’s response.
NAMDA added that the resolution followed public appeals and assurances from the Governing Council and the Oyo State Commissioner for Education, reflecting the union’s commitment to safeguarding the academic progress of medical students and preventing further disruption to their training.
“This resolution is taken in good faith, acknowledging appeals from the public and stakeholders, and trusting that the University Management will expedite payment of outstanding allowances and arrears. Our priority remains protecting the training and progression of our medical students,” the statement read.
The union reaffirmed its trust in the ongoing efforts of the Governing Council and the Commissioner for Education while emphasizing the need to prevent further strain on the university’s medical program.
