Students, Parents React As FG Drops Full List Of Approved Subjects In Curriculum Reform

In a statement issued Monday, the Nigerian Educational Research and Development Council (NERDC) clarified that only the list endorsed by its Executive Secretary, Professor Salisu Shehu, on September 8, 2025, should be regarded as authentic.

“We strongly urge all stakeholders to disregard any other fake or unauthorised list that contradicts the approved subjects released by the Council,” the NERDC warned.

The Council further announced the rollout of nationwide sensitisation campaigns and teacher training programmes to guarantee smooth implementation of the reforms.

The curriculum overhaul, introduced under the Federal Ministry of Education’s National Education Sector Reform Initiatives (NESRI), seeks to reduce curriculum overload and ensure better learning outcomes for Nigerian students.

According to the NERDC, the new subjects will take effect at the start of each three-year education cycle — Primary 1, Primary 4, JSS 1, and SS 1.

The Council reassured stakeholders that the reform marks a turning point for Nigeria’s education system, designed to emphasise relevance, flexibility, and early skill development among learners.

Primary School Subjects (Primary 1–3):
