Students Raise Alarm After Thief Breaks Into Western Delta University Amid Security ConcernsSecurity at Western Delta University, owned by former Delta State Governor Chief James Ibori, was once again breached on Tuesday evening when a thief gained access to the school premises. This incident marks the second security breach at the institution in recent weeks, sparking concerns among students about the adequacy of safety measures on campus.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HEREā¶
A student, speaking to SaharaReporters, expressed frustration over the lack of visible security presence, despite reassurances from the Vice-Chancellor after a previous robbery. āAfter the last robbery, the Vice-Chancellor assured us that we would be safe and that all security measures would be put in place. But despite those assurances, a thief still broke into the school. Since the semester began, I havenāt seen any vigilantes on the ground. Only elderly men are serving as security,ā the student said.
This latest incident follows a similar robbery attack in June, when armed robbers raided the university, entering through an unsecured rear section of the campus. The attack led to widespread panic among students, many of whom fled into nearby bushes to escape the robbers.
A student who had hidden in the bush during the June attack described the terrifying situation: āWe were in a state of emergency. The university was under siege by armed robbers, and we were trapped. Iām speaking to you from the bush, where I and some other students fled for safety.ā
At the time, the police spokesperson, DSP Bright Edafe, denied that the university was under siege, clarifying that a group of miscreants had attempted to rob the students but fled before the police could intervene. āThe school was not under siege, and no students were in the bush. Some miscreants came in through the unfenced back of the school and attempted a robbery. The students raised the alarm, and we dispatched patrol teams, but the robbers had already fled by the time they arrived,ā he said.
Despite these previous statements, students continue to call for stronger security measures to prevent future incidents and ensure their safety on campus. The recent breaches have heightened concerns about the lack of adequate protection, leaving many students feeling vulnerable.
