On April 24, heavy rains led to the collapse of walls at the Suleja Medium Security Prison in Niger State, allowing 119 inmates to escape, of whom only 23 have been recaptured. Later, on September 9, a flood caused the perimeter wall of the Maiduguri Medium Security Custodial Centre in Borno State to collapse, resulting in the escape of 281 inmates, with just seven apprehended since.

Despite the significant number of escapees, the Correctional Service has not issued any updates on efforts to locate and recapture these individuals. Attempts to reach spokesperson Umar Abubakar for comments went unanswered.
