Okocha’s endorsement holds considerable influence, as he highlighted the immense potential of the three-time African champions to defy the odds on their road to the prestigious tournament. The Super Eagles appeared to be on the right track following a gritty win in Rwanda, a result that reignited hopes among fans and stakeholders.
However, a disappointing 1-1 draw at home against Zimbabwe dealt a blow to those aspirations, leaving Nigeria in fourth place in their qualifying group—six points adrift of South Africa, who currently lead the table and look poised to clinch the lone World Cup ticket.
Despite the challenges, Okocha remains optimistic. Drawing from his experience representing Nigeria in three World Cup tournaments, he believes the team has what it takes to turn things around. He urged the squad, led by coach Eric Chelle, to approach their remaining four matches with determination and a winning mindset.
“If we want to give ourselves any chance of qualifying, we have to aim to win all our remaining games,” Okocha asserted.
Acknowledging the difficulty of the road ahead, he specifically pointed to the crucial clash with group leaders South Africa as a defining moment.
“Of course, South Africa is leading the group, and facing them won’t be easy. But we still believe we can go there and get a result,” he said.
Okocha’s comments serve as both encouragement and a call to action for the players and coaching staff. He concluded, “If we truly want to qualify, these are the matches we must win. I believe victory is achievable, but it will require immense effort and focus.”
In his interview with iDiski Times, Okocha reaffirmed that with optimism and perseverance, the Super Eagles can still make it to the global stage in 2026.
