Reports suggested a nationwide blackout occurred around 2:47 p.m. on Monday due to a grid collapse. However, TCN explained that the issue was due to arcing on the Benin-Egbin 330kV isolator, which caused a line trip and led to a temporary loss of power in some areas, including Lagos, parts of the South West, North Central, and Abuja.

Other regions, including the South East, North East, and remaining parts of North Central and South West, experienced no disruption in power supply. TCN restored bulk power to the affected areas by 6:10 p.m. the same day.

The statement detailed that the line tripping began at 2:47 p.m. due to a heavy system surge, which led to arcing at the Egbin Transmission Substation switchyard. This caused the Egbin Generating Station to trip, affecting its outgoing lines and increasing the load on the Osogbo-Ihovbor 330kV line. To prevent further issues, the Osogbo-Ihovbor line was temporarily shut down.

By 2:56 p.m., the Benin-Egbin 330kV line 1 Circuit Breaker tripped, impacting power supply to several areas but leaving other regions unaffected. The issue was swiftly addressed, and power was fully restored by 6:10 p.m.

TCN also noted that the national grid has experienced 227 collapses between 2010 and April 2024.
