With just three days to go before a planned nationwide protest on August 1, the public outcry has come ahead of schedule. Protesters marched from Suleja LGA in Niger State, making their way to Abuja via the Abuja-Kaduna expressway. Their placards carried powerful messages such as “Hardship is unbearable,” “Enough is enough,” and “Fuel subsidies must be back.”

Security agencies and government officials have previously warned and pleaded with those planning to protest to reconsider their actions, citing potential repercussions. Statements from the police, Department of State Services (DSS), and the military have cautioned against proceeding with the demonstrations.

Despite the heavy presence of anti-protest groups in Lagos and Abuja on Sunday and Monday morning, who rallied with messages like ‘Say No to Protest,’ many Nigerians remain resolute in their plans. The August 1 protest, tagged #EndBadGovernance, will see various groups across the nation marching to demand urgent improvements in the country’s situation. Key demands from protesters include a revision of the petrol retail price, an increase in the minimum wage to N70,000, free education, and enhanced security
