The motorcycle operators had been waiting at their designated park to pick up passengers when a police minibus, also known as āKorope,ā arrived. The officers moved in to seize the motorcycles, but the riders resisted, leading to a violent clash.
An eyewitness, Olusoji Aina, told PUNCH Metro that the altercation resulted in the destruction of the minibusās windshield and the theft of one motorcycle by the police. āSome riders fled with their motorcycles when the police arrived. The ones who couldnāt escape resisted and clashed with the officers. During this, some of the riders smashed the police minibusās windshield,ā Aina said.
Upon visiting the scene the following morning, our correspondent found broken pieces of the windshield scattered on the ground.
One motorcycle rider, speaking anonymously, accused the police of regularly raiding their park. āThis happens frequently. The police come, seize our bikes, and demand money at the station before releasing them. I managed to escape yesterday when they arrived,ā he said.
Another rider, Wasiu, explained that the park was located on a designated route. āWe are allowed to operate on this route, so we donāt understand why they keep raiding our park. We only shuttle between Council and Powerline. We donāt know what we did wrong,ā he added.
The Divisional Police Officer (DPO) of Idimu Police Station, Gladys Faniyi, denied knowledge of the incident. āI am not aware of such an incident involving my officers. I will investigate. However, motorcycle operators are often caught plying non-designated routes, which is why we arrest them,ā she stated.
Residents and landlords in the area have also complained about the arbitrary arrests and alleged assaults by police officers. The officers have been accused of extorting money from motorcycle riders due to a failure of their union leaders to remit certain fees to them.
In a previous incident on December 2, 2022, PUNCH Metro observed about 15 police officers storming the Powerline area where they beat up several riders and assaulted traders and passengers who tried to intervene. Six motorcycles were seized during that raid.
