Tension Rises As IGP Egbetokun Remains In Office Past Retirement Deadline!

While numerous senior officers have been forced into retirement over alleged age falsification and breaches of service rules, Egbetokun remains in office, fueling discontent within the force.

On March 3, 2025, Egbetokun officially retired all his coursemates and replaced them with officers seen as loyal to him. However, questions are being raised within police ranks about why the IGP himself has yet to step down, despite enforcing strict retirement policies on others.

A police insider revealed to SaharaReporters that Egbetokun privately admitted he nearly lost his position but was saved by the intervention of First Lady Remi Tinubu, with whom he reportedly shares close ties.

“The IGP almost lost his job, but the First Lady stepped in. Now, he’s more confident than ever and making strategic moves to secure his position,” a senior government official disclosed.

Egbetokun Reportedly Moves to Force Out AIG Owohunwa

The latest officer caught in the storm is Assistant Inspector General (AIG) Idowu Owohunwa, whom Egbetokun allegedly views as an adversary and a threat to his prolonged stay in office.

Sources indicate that Owohunwa’s retirement letter has already been drafted and is expected to be issued next week after he was denied promotion to Deputy Inspector General (DIG). The Police Service Commission (PSC) declined to elevate him, effectively sealing his fate.

Earlier this week, the PSC approved the appointment of six new Deputy Inspectors General of Police (DIGs) to replace officers recently forced into retirement by police authorities.
