According to Sir D.D. Iwuoha, the former Traditional Prime Minister of the community, the delay has led to accusations that Madu is using stalling tactics to extend his term unlawfully.

In response, Madu acknowledged the expiration of his term but cited the community’s mourning period for their late Traditional Ruler, HRH Eze Alban Uzor, who passed away in 2023 and was buried on December 29 of that year. Madu argued that according to the town’s constitution, no public events or elections should occur during the mourning period, which he claims lasts until December 29, 2024.

Madu also referenced the previous mourning period for Ugoeze Grace Uzor, which lasted a year and suspended all community activities, including the August meeting.

In light of the ongoing conflict, Innocent Ikechukwu Ikpamezie, the member representing Mbaitoli Constituency in the Imo State House of Assembly, has stepped in to mediate. He urged the involved parties to seek a peaceful resolution and adhere to the town’s constitution. During a meeting with village heads, including former town union president Herbert Eluchie and youth leader Joseph Ibekwe, Ikpamezie expressed his commitment to resolving the issue and emphasized the need to respect the mourning period while addressing the election delay.
