Tensions Boil Over In SDP As Power Struggle Erupts Over NWC Appointments

A fresh wave of leadership crisis has engulfed the Social Democratic Party (SDP) amid conflicting announcements regarding appointments to its National Working Committee (NWC).

While the party’s National Publicity Secretary, Rufus Aiyenigba, had earlier revealed the appointment of Senator Ugochukwu Uba as Deputy National Chairman (South), Dr. Sadiq Umar Abubakar as Deputy National Chairman (North), and Mr. Hussaini Ado Bello as National Financial Secretary, these claims have been firmly refuted by the party’s National Chairman, Shehu Gabam.

Gabam, through the party’s Deputy National Secretary, Muhammad Biu, dismissed the appointments as “unauthorised, misleading, and entirely false,” stating that no constitutional meeting was held to validate such changes.

“There was no resolution or official approval of those purported appointments. The so-called meeting on May 15 did not sanction any alteration to the composition of the NWC,” Biu clarified at a press briefing in Abuja.

He accused unnamed elements within the party of deliberately attempting to create division and destabilise the SDP as the 2027 elections draw near. “These actions are part of a calculated move to undermine the only remaining credible opposition party,” he said.

Meanwhile, the Chairman of the SDP Caucus in the House of Representatives, Hon. Jonathan Gazah, has called for an investigation into the origin of the controversial press statement and pledged disciplinary measures where necessary.

He reaffirmed the SDP’s commitment to internal democracy and inclusivity, urging members to concentrate on grassroots mobilisation efforts as preparations for 2027 intensify.
