Tensions Explode In Labour Party: Abure Declares NEC Illegal, Slams Otti For Alleged Resource Misuse

The Labour Party has denounced as illegal a meeting held on Friday, July 18, 2025, by suspended members claiming to represent the party’s National Executive Committee (NEC).

In a statement signed by the National Secretary, Alhaji Umar Farouk Ibrahim, the party stated that the gathering lacked constitutional legitimacy and that any resolutions made would not be acknowledged.

According to the party, the NEC meeting was convened in violation of the procedures clearly outlined in its constitution, which mandates that only the National Secretary—acting in agreement with the National Chairman—is authorized to summon such a meeting.

The statement further alleged that the faction loyal to Abia State Governor, Dr. Alex Otti—who remains under suspension—disregarded this established process.

Reaffirming its position, the party clarified that its leadership structure remains intact, with no vacancy or need for a caretaker committee. It asserted that the current leadership will serve until 2028.

“Dr. Otti and his associates must now understand that the party has moved forward and is fully focused on the 2027 general elections—with or without their involvement.

“We categorically reject the meeting held today and urge all party members to disregard its outcome. Furthermore, we call on the governor to redirect Abia State’s resources toward delivering essential infrastructure, rather than wasting them on political distractions,” the statement concluded.
