Tensions Rise As PDP Insists Monday’s NEC Meeting Is Irrevocable

The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has reaffirmed that it will hold its 100th National Executive Committee (NEC) meeting as originally planned on Monday, June 30, 2025. The party emphasized that no individual, group, or organ within the party structure has the authority to alter, postpone, override, or transform the already scheduled NEC session.

This declaration was made by Ambassador Taofeek Arapaja, the PDP Deputy National Chairman (South), who spoke on behalf of the National Working Committee (NWC) during a press conference on Sunday.

Arapaja also confirmed that the PDP National Convention, slated for Thursday, August 28 to Saturday, August 30, 2025, will take place as planned.

He dismissed circulating reports suggesting that the NEC meeting had been changed to a “Special Expanded National Caucus” meeting, clarifying that no such organ exists under the party’s constitution or operational guidelines.

“We are here to update members of our great party and the general public regarding the upcoming activities of the PDP, particularly the 100th NEC meeting scheduled for Monday, June 30, 2025, and the National Convention scheduled from August 28 to 30, 2025.

“To be clear, the National Working Committee (NWC) assures all party members that the 100th NEC meeting will proceed as planned at the NEC Hall, Wadata Plaza, the PDP’s national secretariat in Abuja.

“The NEC meeting will focus, among other things, on receiving progress reports from the Zoning Committee and the Convention Organising Committee.

“As stipulated in Section 31(3) of the PDP Constitution (2017 as amended), the date set for the 100th NEC meeting is binding on all party members and organs. Therefore, no individual or body within the party can lawfully alter, cancel, or reinterpret this meeting.”

He further clarified that a “Special Expanded National Caucus” meeting, as referenced in certain social media posts, is entirely nonexistent and unconstitutional, and urged the public to disregard such claims.

“The PDP Constitution, particularly Section 30, clearly defines the composition and powers of the National Caucus, with no allowance for expansion or modification. Any reference to an ‘Expanded National Caucus’ is not only invalid but also lacks any legal basis within the party’s structure,” Arapaja stated.

He concluded by stressing the PDP’s unwavering commitment to the rule of law, internal democracy, and constitutional order, reassuring members of the party’s resolve to uphold these principles during the NEC and National Convention.
