During a media chat in Abuja on Wednesday, Wike criticized Fubara’s actions, insisting that the governor should have awaited approval from the Assembly, led by Speaker Martins Amaewhule, before planning the visit. Wike described Fubara’s attempt as political grandstanding, particularly given that his administration had demolished the Assembly Complex in December 2023.
Fubara was reportedly locked out of the Assembly Quarters on Wednesday when he arrived to re-present the 2025 budget, following the Supreme Court’s ruling on February 28, 2025, which reaffirmed Amaewhule as Speaker. Amaewhule and over 20 lawmakers are known to be loyal to Wike.
Speaking at the scene, Fubara explained that he had informed Amaewhule of his planned visit, and the Rivers State Government had also sent an official letter notifying the House.
However, Wike dismissed Fubara’s actions, saying, “If you write a letter to the Assembly, wouldn’t you wait for a response? He’s just playing to the gallery. He brought the TV crew along to publicize his visit. You know that’s wrong. Can the president just stand up and walk into the National Assembly? Who does that?”
Wike continued his criticism, saying, “He brought down the Assembly complex. Now, they sit in their residence. If you’re coming, they have children, and they need to prepare. You can’t just open the gate and say, ‘I’m coming to present the budget.’ That’s nonsense. Rubbish. Who’s doing that? Playing to the gallery. Nobody will take him seriously.”
