The International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO), a United Nations entity overseeing global air travel regulations, has dispatched a team of experts to Nigeria to conduct security assessments at two key airports. The airports under scrutiny are the Murtala Muhammed International Airport in Lagos and the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport in Abuja.
This audit, falling within the 2024 ICAO Universal Security Audit Programme through Continuous Monitoring Approach, will scrutinize various critical aspects of aviation security. These include Inflight Security, Passenger and Baggage Security, Acts of Unlawful Interference, Facilitation, Legislation, Training, Quality Control Function, Operations, and Cargo, Mail, and Catering.
The announcement of this audit was conveyed in a statement released by Michael Achimugu, the Director of Public Affairs & Consumer Protection, on behalf of the Naija News on Monday. The four-member team assigned to conduct the audit comprises Callum Vine as the team lead, along with James Mabala, Tebogo Mphela, and Alagie Jeng.
The audit, conducted under the USAP CMA framework, is anticipated to span almost two weeks and is slated to conclude on March 22, 2024. Festus Keyamo, the Minister of Aviation and Aerospace Development, underscored the importance of this audit in maintaining the highest security standards within Nigeria’s aviation industry. He emphasized that the audit reflects a concerted effort to uphold these standards across the country’s aviation sector.
Nigeria’s objective is to fortify its defenses against evolving threats and vulnerabilities through thorough assessments, comprehensive evaluations, and collaborative partnerships. This proactive approach aligns with global efforts to ensure the continued safety and security of air travel.
