Born on November 8, 1938, in Kano, to Risqua Muhammed and Uwani Rahamat, General Murtala Muhammed was the ninth of 11 children. His educational journey led him to Barewa College in Zaria, where he graduated in 1957. Joining the Nigerian Army in 1958 at the age of 20, he further honed his skills as an officer cadet at the Sandhurst Royal Military Academy in England. Later in his career, he served as the Federal Minister Commissioner for Communications.

Murtala assumed the role of the Military Head of Nigeria on July 29, 1975, following the overthrow of General Yakubu Gowon. Noted for his unassuming lifestyle and a commitment to restructuring, Murtala’s reign was marked by significant changes in the nation.

The simplicity that defined Murtala’s life, coupled with his lack of an official escort, is believed by many to have contributed to his tragic death. His assassination occurred on George Street in Lagos, near the Federal Secretariat at Ikoyi. Ambushed by soldiers affiliated with the abortive coup led by Dimka, Murtala and his aide-de-camp, Lieutenant Akintunde Akinsehinwa, lost their lives that day.

Murtala Muhammed’s demise at the age of 37 sent shockwaves across the nation. His assassination was orchestrated as part of an attempted coup by Lt. Col Buka Suka Dimka, who was subsequently executed on May 15, 1976, at the Kirikiri Maximum Security Prison in Lagos for treason.

Following Murtala’s tragic end, the Chief of Staff, Supreme HQ Olusegun Obasanjo, took the helm and successfully executed the plan of an orderly transfer to civilian rule. On October 1, 1979, power was handed over to Shehu Shagari, marking the completion of a tumultuous period in Nigeria’s political history.
