Good morning esteemed judges, fellow debaters, and viewers at home. My name is Tolu, and I will be your moderator for today’s debate. We have Osigwe Omo-Ikirodah from Bush Radio Academy, who will be presenting arguments in favor of the motion that President Tinubu means well for the country. Without further ado, Osigwe, you may begin your opening statement.
Osigwe: Good morning, moderators, panel of judges, co-debater, and viewers at home. My name is Osigwe Omo-Ikirodah from Bush Radio Academy, and I stand before you today to assert that President Tinubu genuinely has the best interests of our beloved country at heart.
Firstly, let us consider President Tinubu’s track record as a visionary leader. Throughout his tenure as Governor of Lagos State, he implemented numerous policies and initiatives that transformed the state into an economic powerhouse.
Secondly, President Tinubu possesses vast experience and political acumen. He has a deep understanding of the intricacies of governance, having played a crucial role in the democratic transition of Nigeria. His leadership skills, honed through years of political engagement, will enable him to effectively steer our nation toward progress and development.
Furthermore, President Tinubu has consistently demonstrated his commitment to grassroots empowerment. He understands that sustainable development can only be achieved by uplifting the most vulnerable segments of society.
Now, let us delve into specific achievements under President Tinubu’s leadership. On the day of resuming as the 16th President, he announced the removal of subsidy and deregulation of the electricity and petroleum sectors. While this may have initially caused some challenges, it was a necessary step toward a more sustainable and efficient energy market.
Additionally, President Tinubu has been proactive in engaging both the local and international community to improve our trade relations. By fostering stronger ties, he seeks to create beneficial opportunities for all Nigerians, stimulating economic growth and development.
One significant action taken by President Tinubu is the declaration of a state of emergency on food security. This move highlights his commitment to ensuring that every Nigerian has access to adequate food. Allow me to present ten benefits of President Bola Tinubu’s state of emergency on food security:
1 Immediate release of fertilizers and grains: Farmers and households will receive immediate access to fertilizers and grains to mitigate the effects of subsidy removal, ensuring food availability.
2 Organic synergy with water resources: Collaboration between the Ministry of Agriculture and the Ministry of Water Resources will ensure adequate irrigation of farmlands, guaranteeing year-round food production.
3 Creation of National Commodity Board: A National Commodity Board will be established to review and assess food prices, maintaining a strategic food reserve to stabilize prices of critical grains and other food items.
4 Protection for farmers: The government will engage the security architecture to protect farms and farmers, creating a safe environment for agricultural activities.
5 Collaboration with the Central Bank: The Central Bank will continue to play a significant role in funding the agricultural value chain, ensuring sustained support for farmers and the agricultural sector.
6 Activation of land banks: The government will utilize already mapped 500,000 hectares of land to increase the availability of arable land for farming, leading to increased food output.
7 Mechanization and land clearing: Collaborations with mechanization companies will help clear forests and make more land available for farming, promoting agricultural expansion.
8 River basins and irrigation schemes: Utilizing the 11 river basins, crops can be planted during the dry season using irrigation schemes, ensuring continuous farming production throughout the year.
9 Concessionary funding: Concessionary capital and funding will be deployed towards critical aspects of the agricultural sector, such as fertilizer, processing, mechanization, seeds, and equipment, enhancing productivity.
10 Job creation and employment opportunities: The interventions in the agricultural sector will lead to a boost in employment and job creation, aiming to double the current percentage of employment in agriculture from 35.21% to about 70% in the long term.
In addition to these initiatives, President Tinubu has introduced student loans to enable even the poorest of the poor to access tertiary education. This demonstrates his commitment to leveling the playing field and providing equal opportunities for all Nigerian youth.
Furthermore, President Tinubu has rolled out palliative measures to cushion the effects of the subsidy removal, acknowledging the challenges it might pose to certain segments of society. This exemplifies his dedication to ensuring the well-being of the Nigerian population.
Lastly, President Tinubu has taken leadership of the ECOWAS community, signifying his ability to engage on a regional scale and address shared challenges facing West Africa.
His policies and actions, such as the removal of subsidy, focus on food security, introduction of student loans, and unification of the exchange rate, demonstrate his commitment to sustainable development and progress.
Let us embrace the potential he offers and rally behind his vision for a prosperous and unified Nigeria. Thank you.
Moderator: Thank you, Osigwe, for your comprehensive and compelling arguments in support of President Tinubu. We will now move on to the cross-examination round, where our co-debater will have the opportunity to pose questions to further explore the arguments presented.
