The North Has Not Forgotten’ – Yakasai Reveals Why Jonathan Can’t Stop Tinubu In 2027
The Director General of the Tinubu Support Group, Umar Yakasai, has declared that former President Goodluck Jonathan stands no chance of defeating President Bola Tinubu in the 2027 elections.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
He argued that Nigerians would reject Jonathan because of bitter memories from his administration, stressing that both Tinubu and the All Progressives Congress (APC) have nothing to fear from his potential candidacy.
Speaking in an interview with ARISE NEWS on Thursday, Yakasai dismissed reports that the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) was considering fielding Jonathan in 2027, saying Nigerians had already rejected him in 2015 and would do so again.
“Nigerians have not forgotten the failures of Jonathan’s government. In 2015, they voted for change and embraced the APC. I don’t think his candidacy is anything to worry about,” Yakasai stated.
He further maintained that the North would not support Jonathan despite talk of a single-term presidency. According to him, insecurity thrived under Jonathan, corruption scandals like the $2.1 billion arms deal remain fresh, and northern voters consistently sided with Muhammadu Buhari over Jonathan.
“The North has not forgotten. During Jonathan’s tenure, a five-hour journey from Abuja to Kaduna took 12 hours with endless checkpoints. Nigerians were humiliated. Those lessons are still clear in their minds,” he said.
On Tinubu’s performance, Yakasai defended the administration, crediting it with stabilizing the economy in just two years despite the pains of subsidy removal and currency reforms. He noted that inflation, which spiked in 2023, had returned to 2023 levels by 2025 and applauded the government’s support for the Dangote Refinery in reducing petrol prices.
He concluded that while insecurity challenges remain in some states, Nigerians are no longer facing the same humiliations they endured during Jonathan’s government.
