The System Didn’t Suit Me — Paul Onuachu Reveals Why His Southampton Spell Failed

Super Eagles striker Paul Onuachu has opened up on the factors behind his difficult spell at Southampton, citing a tactical mismatch, frequent managerial changes and the timing of his January 2023 transfer as major challenges.

Onuachu joined Southampton in January 2023 after establishing himself as a prolific goalscorer during his time in Belgium and Denmark. However, the Nigerian forward struggled to reproduce that form in the Premier League and eventually left the English club.

Speaking to Trabzonspor Magazine, Onuachu explained that Southampton’s playing system did not complement his style, while the frequent changes in the coaching staff made it difficult for him to settle and adapt.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the striker acknowledged that his move came at a difficult point in the season and admitted that players need to carefully examine a club’s tactical approach and environment before making transfer decisions.

“There are times in football when things don’t go well. For me, the Southampton period was like that. First of all, the transfer happened in January,” Onuachu said.

He explained that although he does not regret his career decisions, his experience at Southampton taught him the importance of understanding a team’s system before joining.

Onuachu also pointed to the numerous managerial changes at the club and the lack of a suitable tactical system as factors that affected his performance.

He said Southampton faced an uncertain battle against relegation at the time of his arrival, adding that he understood the risks involved when he decided to make the move.

The Nigerian striker further advised players to conduct proper research before joining new clubs, stressing the importance of understanding how a team operates and whether its style of play matches their strengths.

“Maybe I’m making excuses, but sometimes if you want to go to a team, you need to ask and learn very, very well about the system, how things work in the team, and everything else,” he said.

Since leaving Southampton, Onuachu has rebuilt his confidence and goalscoring form at Turkish club Trabzonspor. The striker has scored 45 goals and provided six assists in 69 appearances across all competitions for the club, highlighting his resurgence after his challenging period in England.

His experience has also offered a reflection on how tactical compatibility, managerial stability and the timing of a transfer can influence a player’s ability to settle and perform at a new club.
