The President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, has labeled the service-based electricity tariff system, which categorizes users into different bands based on the service delivered by distribution companies, as a blatant form of fraud.....KINDLY READ THE FULL STORY HERE▶
During a budget defense session at the National Assembly earlier this week, the Minister of Power, Adebayo Adelabu, claimed that 90 percent of electricity users in Band A reported enjoying the benefits of their category and announced plans to migrate more customers to Band A for longer electricity supply.
In response, Ajaero, speaking on Channels Television’s Politics Today on Thursday, criticized the plan to migrate customers between bands, questioning the criteria for such classifications and calling the practice discriminatory.
“The idea of migrating from Band A to Band B is the highest level of 419 imaginable,” Ajaero said. “Who determines who is in Band A or Band B? Is it based on geographical location or the whims of the service provider? In countries working toward 24-hour power supply, why are we even discussing Band A and Band B? This system seems designed to exploit consumers under the guise of service improvement.”
Ajaero further criticized the Federal Government for allocating funds to power distribution companies in the 2025 budget despite these companies being privately owned. He argued that the government’s resources could be better utilized elsewhere and insisted that private power firms should fund their operations with their own revenue.
