The Federal Government has urged members of the National Assembly to conduct broader consultations before finalizing the Nigerian National Anthem Bill. Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice, Lateef Fagbemi, made this statement in Abuja during a public hearing on the bill aimed at reverting to the old national anthem.

The House of Representatives expedited the bill’s passage in a single session last Thursday, while the Senate proceeded with the bill through initial and subsequent readings.

Addressing the hearing, organized jointly by the Senate Committees on Judiciary, Human Rights and Legal Matters, and Interior, Fagbemi highlighted the absence of consultations with other stakeholders before the bill’s passage.

He advocated for a more inclusive process involving Nigerians, as well as other governmental bodies, to ensure a comprehensive decision regarding the reversion to the old national anthem before enacting it into law.

Fagbemi specifically recommended consultations through zonal public hearings and resolutions by the Federal Executive Council, Council of State, National and State Assemblies, among others.

He emphasized the necessity of this broader approach to ensure that any decision regarding Nigeria’s National Anthem aligns with the majority wishes of Nigerians.

In conclusion, Fagbemi expressed gratitude for the opportunity to contribute to this national discourse.

This statement underscores the importance of involving all relevant stakeholders in significant national decisions like changing the national anthem.
