Speaking at the opening ceremony of the Progressives Digital Media Summit, themed “Unveiling the Critical Role of New Media in National Development,” the President emphasized the need for responsible use of digital influence—highlighting the importance of fact-checking and promoting constructive narratives.
He encouraged the youth to be agents of change by building impactful businesses, creating job opportunities, and producing content that reflects values of unity and progress.
“I urge you to keep using digital platforms to drive Nigeria’s progress. Build businesses that employ others. Create content that uplifts and unites. Use your influence to foster unity, not division,” Tinubu said in a statement released by his Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga.
The President praised the innovation and resilience of Nigerian youth, describing digital media as a major force for economic growth and social transformation—not just a lifestyle accessory.
“From developing groundbreaking platforms to building vibrant online communities, you are showing the determination that is reshaping what is possible in this country. You are not waiting for the future—you are actively building it,” Tinubu added.
He also reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to supporting digital innovation through the National Digital Innovation Fund and policies designed to nurture a thriving startup ecosystem.
However, he cautioned digital practitioners to stay alert against disinformation, fake news, and cyber threats that could destabilize society.
Segun Dada, the summit convener and Special Assistant to the President on New Media, noted that digital media has rapidly evolved over the last decade into a powerful tool for communication, innovation, and national influence. He stressed the need to harness this force for Nigeria’s good while addressing challenges such as privacy concerns and threats to national unity.
