President Bola Tinubu has appointed Dr. Nkiruka Maduekwe as the interim Director-General/Chief Executive Officer of the National Council on Climate Change (NCCC), pending confirmation by the NCCC Supervisory Council.

According to Ajuri Ngelale, Tinubu’s Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, this appointment aligns with the President’s commitment to realizing Nigeria’s green industrial vision, enhancing investor confidence, and leveraging climate finance for sustainable economic growth.

Dr. Maduekwe, aged 39, holds a Bachelor of Law degree, a Master’s in Environmental Law & Policy from the University of Dundee (UK), and a Doctorate in Law from the University of Hull (UK). She brings over 15 years of experience in climate policy and project implementation, having previously served as Nigeria’s National Coordinator for Climate Parliament and as legal adviser to the NCCC Director-General.

In addition to her new role, Dr. Maduekwe will serve as Co-Chairperson of the Intergovernmental Committee on the National Carbon Market Activation Plan (NCMAP).

President Tinubu has also appointed Ibrahim Abdullahi Shelleng, 40, as Senior Special Assistant on Climate Finance & Stakeholder Engagement. Shelleng, who holds an MBA from Ahmadu Bello University, will serve at the NCCC Secretariat and assume the role of Secretary of the Intergovernmental Committee on NCMAP. He will also be a member of the Presidential Committee on Climate Action and Green Economic Solutions and the Presidential Steering Committee on Project Evergreen.

Furthermore, Olamide Fagbuji, 44, has been appointed Senior Special Assistant on Climate Technology and Operations. Fagbuji will oversee the digitalization of procurement processes and optimization initiatives at the NCCC Secretariat. He previously served as Special Assistant on Economic Matters and was the Technical Adviser to the NCCC Director-General on Policy Research and Strategy.

These appointments are effective immediately, with the President expecting the new appointees to leverage their expertise to advance Nigeria’s green industrial development and climate action goals.
