The controversy arose after Paul Ibe, a spokesperson for Atiku Abubakar, the 2023 Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) presidential candidate, asserted that Tinubu had advised Buhari to print Naira in 2020. This statement followed comments made by Minister of Finance, Wale Edun, regarding the printing of N22.7 trillion under Buhari’s administration.
Edun highlighted that the Central Bank of Nigeria, under Buhari’s government and former CBN governor Godwin Emefiele, had printed N22.7 trillion in the form of a Ways and Means loan. According to Edun, this action was a major contributor to the current inflation and economic challenges in Nigeria.
Addressing the Senate Committee on Finance, Edun criticized the purported aimlessness of the Ways and Means loans during the past administration, emphasizing that reckless spending of the overdraft from the CBN under Emefiele had exacerbated food and security crises in the country.
The minister pledged that Tinubu’s government would conduct an audit of the CBN’s printing activities over the past eight years. In response, Onanuga recalled Tinubu’s clarification on the matter when it was initially reported.
Onanuga posted on X, stating, “President Tinubu did not advise the Buhari administration to print Naira, contrary to the erroneous reports in 2020. He provided a clarification in Thisday on March 30, 2020, a day after the false report surfaced.
