The President made this declaration during an interactive session with Nigerians residing in Saint Lucia on Wednesday, held at the Windjammer Resort in the capital, Castries.
According to a statement released by Presidential spokesperson Bayo Onanuga on Thursday, July 3, Tinubu explained that his administration inherited an economy teetering on the edge of collapse. Since then, his government has implemented key reforms aimed at ensuring long-term stability and attracting investor confidence.
“Despite the challenges, we’ve begun laying the groundwork for recovery. Nigeria was close to bankruptcy when we took over, but we’ve managed to turn things around. Nigeria has recovered,” Tinubu said.
He also highlighted some of the reforms undertaken, including efforts to curb oil theft and improve transparency in the foreign exchange system.
“We’ve made oil smuggling unprofitable, and we no longer chase forex documents at the Central Bank,” he added.
Addressing the Nigerian community in Saint Lucia—which included professionals, students, and religious leaders—President Tinubu reiterated his administration’s commitment to supporting citizens in the diaspora.
“To all of you living and working here: we won’t abandon you. But you must continue to work hard. It’s our responsibility to support your success,” he assured.
The President urged Nigerians abroad to be law-abiding and to represent the country positively.
“I appeal to you all: be of good conduct, stay focused, and obey the law,” he advised.
Reflecting on his own experience as a student in the United States over five decades ago, Tinubu remarked, “Life is about dedication and perseverance.”
This was Tinubu’s second diaspora meeting in as many days, following a similar event on Tuesday night at the residence of Saint Lucia’s Prime Minister, Philip J. Pierre.
One pressing issue raised during the session was the annual $2,500 work permit fee imposed on Nigerians in Saint Lucia. Smart Duah, President of the Nigerians in Diaspora Organisation in the country, called the fee excessive and requested the establishment of a Nigerian diplomatic mission on the island.
In response, President Tinubu assured the audience that steps were being taken to address their concerns diplomatically.
Nigerians Making the Nation Proud – Dabiri-Erewa
Abike Dabiri-Erewa, Chairperson of the Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NiDCOM), praised the Nigerian community in Saint Lucia for their resilience and positive contributions.
“Nigeria is proud of what you’re doing here,” she said, while commending Tinubu for engaging personally with Nigerians abroad.
At the event, Dr. Olugbemisola Ogunlusi, a paediatrician who has lived in Saint Lucia for nearly 20 years, expressed appreciation for the President’s visit. She shared that she and her husband, who now heads a federal medical centre in Nigeria, raised children who also became medical doctors.
“Your visit has amplified Nigeria’s image more than we ever expected,” she stated.
