Tinubu Extends Tenures Of Correctional, Immigration Service Chiefs Until 2028

President Bola Tinubu has approved an 18-month extension of the tenures of the heads of the Nigerian Correctional Service (NCS) and the Nigeria Immigration Service (NIS), allowing both officials to remain in office until 2028.

According to Bush Radio Academy, the President’s Special Adviser on Information and Strategy, Bayo Onanuga, announced the decision in a statement on Monday.

Under the arrangement, the Controller-General of the Nigerian Correctional Service, Sylvester Ndidi Nwakuche, will remain in office until May 26, 2028, while the Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service, Kemi Nanna Nandap, will continue in her position until June 30, 2028.

The statement explained that the extension followed a recommendation by the Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, to prevent a leadership vacuum in both agencies and give their respective boards sufficient time to appoint successors.

Tinubu also commended the two service chiefs for the reforms recorded during their time in office and urged them to sustain and strengthen the progress achieved.

“President Tinubu commended Nwakuche and Nandap for the reforms achieved under their leadership and charged them to consolidate these gains,” the statement said.

Nwakuche was nominated by Tinubu to lead the Nigerian Correctional Service in December 2024, with the Senate confirming his appointment in March 2025.

Nandap was nominated as Comptroller-General of the Nigeria Immigration Service on February 21, 2024, and her appointment received Senate confirmation on March 1, 2024.

The latest decision will keep both officials at the helm of their respective agencies beyond their previously expected tenure timelines, while providing additional time for the process of selecting their successors.
