A prominent figure within the New Nigeria People’s Party, NNPP, Ambassador Olufemi Ajadi, has strongly criticized the federal government’s proposed N48,000 minimum wage, asserting that it is insufficient for workers to subsist on. Expressing his disappointment with this proposal, Ajadi highlighted the stark reality faced by workers in Nigeria today. In a statement shared with DAILY POST, he emphasized that the government failed to consider the current economic circumstances when arriving at the N48,000 figure. He echoed the sentiments of labor unions in rejecting this proposal, emphasizing its impracticality given the soaring costs of living, particularly with essentials such as fuel priced well above N700 per liter in many places.
Ajadi suggested alternative approaches to wage structuring, including paying workers based on their hours worked to ensure fair compensation for genuine efforts. He called on the federal government to prioritize the welfare of Nigerian workers by revising the proposed wage upward, citing examples like Edo State, which independently increased its minimum wage to N70,000.
While supporting labor’s rejection of the N48,000 proposal, Ajadi encouraged continued negotiation rather than outright withdrawal from the talks. He urged labor representatives to effectively communicate the challenges faced by workers and push for a minimum wage closer to N200,000, emphasizing the dire necessity for such an increase in light of prevailing economic realities.
